Artificial Intelligence is inspiring the Next Generation of Developers

Winning AI solutions

The 2018 Imagine Cup winners dealt with a broad spectrum of issues, from helping farmers manage their sick plants to helping new parents identify the meaning of their babies' crying. Although these solutions addressed different problems, their paths to success have a similar underlying structure: each team began by identifying a problem they were passionate about. They then carefully scrutinized the resources available to them, including the AI, and intelligently used these capabilities to create prototypes and solutions with potentially excessive impact. AI is truly in the mainstream right now, and it allows motivated people to turn their great ideas into reality and have an impact on the world.

Smart ARM

Canada's Smart ARM Team won first place with its AI-infused robotic prosthetic arm, which is designed to provide users with a low-cost multiple-prosthetic prosthesis. When people with upper extremity amputations decide whether they want to use a functional prosthesis, they usually face the option of buying a single arm with a single fist or spending tens of thousands of dollars on a more advanced myoelectric arm. The high cost of advanced prostheses prevents many people from accessing a device that can help them greatly in their daily lives. Smart ARM reduces this barrier by providing several grip features for approximately $ 100.

The trick to the low price achieved by the Smart ARM is the use of 3D printing and low-cost, easy-to-access cloud technology. The camera in the palm of the intelligent arm captures a video of what is in view of the arm. When the user points the palm of his hand toward an object of interest, the video frames are sent to the Azure cloud, where the Cognitive Services Custom View template helps to identify the object and returns the best adherence, according to the size and shape of the object. The tightness determined by the model is activated in smart ARM once the user sends the activation signal.

This allows users to interact with a variety of objects, from picking up house keys to holding a mug. It's a really intriguing solution, the idea of integrating a camera and vision into a prosthetic arm. In a companion blog post, we plan to delve deeper into the history of smart ARM and the underlying technology.

iCry2Talk

Greece's iCry2Talk team won second place with its mobile app, designed to help parents identify their baby's crying needs. New parents and especially hearing impaired parents or mothers with postpartum depression often find it difficult to immediately identify the needs of the crying baby. This result is an undesirable stress for the parents and the child, often several times a day.

Immediate response to crying is essential for the baby's healthy physiological and psychosocial development. Although babies cannot express their needs through the use of language, they give clues through their cries and body language. The screams themselves contain information that can help parents identify what the baby's immediate needs are, but these signs can be hard to hear by untrained ears.

The iCry2Talk team strives to improve the quality of communication and the relationship between parents and babies by helping them understand their children's crying.

How does the application work? The parent registers their baby crying through the application using a smartphone or a digital assistant such as Alexa or Cortana. This audio clip is uploaded to the cloud, processed and sorted using your custom Deep Learning templates. The result is sent back to the phone or to the digital assistant in seconds, and the parent is notified of the meaning of the cry through text, image, voice comments, and sign language.

The team takes a holistic approach, not only focusing on technology but also building and interacting with a community of parents and physicians, as well as design for inclusion, affordability and customization.

ICry2Talk continues to collect audio clips donated by screams from parents involved in their community efforts and is constantly improving their models.

Mid ear

The Team-Mediated Japan Hearing came in third with its mobile application designed to help people with hearing impairments clearly hear the voices of specific people in noisy environments. People with hearing loss may use hearing aids to amplify sound but often find it difficult to isolate individual speakers in noisy environments. This can hinder conversations in public settings and meetings, as several people can talk at once. The team began developing mediated hearing when a friend with hearing loss talked about their challenges when communicating in noisy environments with multiple speakers.

Clearly isolating individual speakers from one another and background noise is not an easy task. The team had to work hard to develop an approach that reliably isolated the individual speakers from a mixed audio source. Mid-ear works like a smartphone application that hears the current conversation and allows the user to adjust the volume of the individual speakers that are played through their headphones.

To isolate a speaker's voice from other voices and background noise, the user hands the phone to the speaker of interest and asks the speaker to talk on the phone for a minute. When the speaker reads the passage shown by the application, the voice audio file is sent to the cloud, where it is processed and sent to a modified Wave Net deep learning model. The model learns the speaker's voice, the application allows the user to capture the speaker's voice and selectively amplify it, which makes it easier for the user to understand what is being said and engage with confidence in the conversation.

With the Mid-Ear, hearing impaired people have control over who they listen to and find it easier to focus on people who want to listen in noisy environments.

SochWare

Nepal's SochWare team won the AI award for its mobile application to help farmers identify plant diseases and take action to mitigate crop damage. Agriculture plays a vital role in Nepal's livelihoods and population, but difficulties in agriculture have led to a decline in agriculture. When farmers notice a sick plant, it is often difficult to recognize what kind of disease is caused by the plant. The challenge of identifying the disease makes it difficult to treat the situation properly. Farmers often suffer losses when they do not treat crops or apply unsuitable chemicals to control the disease. There are also situations where the overuse of chemicals in crops has negative effects on the health of consumers.

In understanding the vitality of agriculture for their country and their families, Team SochWare decided to focus its efforts on developing a solution to this problem. Its solution takes the form of E-Agrovet, a mobile application that uses computer vision to help farmers identify plant diseases and learn the next appropriate steps for treatment.

How does E-Agrovet work? The farmer takes a photo of the plant of interest through the application. Then, this photo is uploaded to the cloud, processed and inserted into your customized Vision of Cognitive Services template. A report based on the results of the Deep Learning image classification model is generated and sent back to the notification centre on the mobile phone. This report informs the farmer about what the disease is, how to mitigate it and can also connect the farmer with experts so they can take action.

Through E-Agrovet, Soch Ware strives to help farmers and reduce the use of unnecessary chemicals in crops, improving the quality of life for everyone.

DrugSafe

India's Drug Safe team won the Big Data Award for its consumer and vendor applications that help fight the consumption and distribution of counterfeit drugs. The whole development began when a friend suddenly felt very sore. The team was surprised to discover that their friend had inadvertently taken fake diabetes medicines and as a result had suffered. After further investigation, the team learned about widespread counterfeiting of drugs, which is estimated at $ 75 billion in 2010, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Realizing the prevalence and widespread gravity of the fake drug, and its role in the unnecessary spread of disease and suffering, the team sought to develop a solution. Because this is a large-scale problem affecting consumers and legitimate drug suppliers, DrugSafe's team has decided to develop a solution for the consumer and the seller through mobile applications and an online dashboard.

What do these applications do?

The mobile application consists of a simple interface that allows users to take pictures of drug labels to detect anomalies in the color of the text and the label. The application sends the photo through a custom channel that involves Azure Cosmos DB and Cognitive Services and notifies the user of the validity of the product. Users have the option of reporting the medication if it is considered illegitimate. Selecting to report the problem will take the user to the integrated chatbot to speed up the reporting process. The application also has a community component and can tell users about pharmacies that are seeing an increase in the sale of counterfeit drugs.

The provider application allows drug vendors to monitor the conditions of their deliveries using an MXChip IoT card to ensure that their medications are delivered safely. The IoT plate records information such as temperature, pressure, humidity and acceleration, which can help suppliers control the status of their shipments.

Through the adoption and use of the DrugSafe application, the team hopes to reduce the spread of the disease and help people gain access to authentic and safe medications.

The Impact of AI

The number and quality of AI-cantered entries in this year's Imagine Cup tell us that the next generation of developers recognizes the potential for AI's game-changing. While each of these student projects met very different needs, teams took a holistic approach and adequately infused their solutions with AI.

We are inspired by the audacity of these young innovators. Their work reinforces our own mission, "to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more." We could not be more excited to support the next generation of developers in the future Imagine Cups and see how their ideas, along with artificial intelligence, will move and shake the world.
